The Importance of a Wedding Album.

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

.

We live in a digital age now.  CDs and DVDs of images have become a highly requested commodity in the photography world.I can’t argue… digital images are convenient, easy to share, and fun.  I want digital copies of all of my photos, too.  More than likely you just spent a lot of money on your images, so you should have a high quality, long lasting, and fabulous way to showcase those images. However, it is a growing trend where wedding albums and session albums are often the first thing to get cut. Many couples aren’t aware of the importance of an album. Some people think that they will get around to creating their own later on… (in this case, life usually gets in the way, the notion of the album falls by the wayside, and they forget).

.
But let me ask you this…
If your house was on fire right now, what you would you grab and save?  What do you hold most dear?

For me, I would want to make sure my family and pets were safe, and then I would want to save all of my photos because those are irreplaceable.  Everything else in my home (computer included) can be replaced, but the memories and photographs I hold dear can’t be re-purchased at some store.  I am willing to bet, that many of you feel the same.

.
Now, I want to ask you something else.
Out of all the images you have stored on your computer’s hard drive…. How often do you revisit and look at those images? How many times do you relive the emotions you experienced by creating those photos?

Since my husband and I started dating, I have documented each year of our lives in photo-book/album.  Our books are all placed in one area waiting for us to flip through the pages and re-live our adventures.  We can also share our experiences with our friends and families.  I believe that it is important for families to have memories, traditions, and special things to pass down through the generations.
.

Lastly, I want you to think about something.
Times are changing and technology grows and gets cooler and more awesome everyday! But just think about 10-20 years ago before iPods and even before CDs and DVDs… What happened to our old VHS tapes and cassette tapes?

We tossed them out because we don’t use them any more, and we purchased newer, bigger, and better things.   Well, what happens when that DVD you purchased of your wedding images or your child’s newborn photos when DVDs are no longer the popular way to store images?  What happens many years down the road when your grandkids want to see photographs of their grandparent’s wedding day?  Are you going to pull up an antique computer to show them? Are you going to keep backing up the images to a new device everytime one is released?  Wouldn’t it be easier to pull out your wedding album and show them and be able to tell your story to them?
.

I truly treasure being able to see my grandparents’ wedding photographs, and I know some day future generations will appreciate it to.  I urge you to not only think about today, but to think about the future and what it would mean for your children and grandchildren to have such a wonderful family heirloom to cherish and pass down.

With wedding albums, they are a way to tell YOUR story.  Each image is carefully selected, edited, and arranged in a manner that compliments the flow of the day while telling the beautiful story of the start of your family.  Session albums are generally smaller, but are edited and published with the same love and care. You can start with your wedding album as the first heirloom you can create for YOUR family, and then you can build on that by capturing memories through the years in new photobooks/albums/coffeetable books.

With all of that being said, I just got my wedding album in (like, yesterday!!).   I know, I know… I was one of those brides, who said… “I will just get the disk and build the album later” It took a little over a year for me to get it done, because I had so much going on with moving twice, building a home, and starting the business!!!! :)  Now, that I have finally have my album, I could kick myself for waiting so long to do it.  In fact, I wish I would have had my photographers’ do it for me, so that I would have had it all this time.
So, I can now speak from experience.  Don’t wait!  Make sure you make your album a priority because you just have no idea what you are missing! Luckily most of my couples get an album, so they are definitely ahead of me on that one!!! :)

Here are a few photos of my wedding album and some of my favorite layouts!
(obviously, I didn’t take the photos.  My spectacular wedding photographers, Daniel and Kelli Taylor, did!)

I did, however, design and order my own album.  So, my clients can expect albums of the same quality and design.
(I also have a minimalist design option, for those who favor a lot of white space! Multiple cover options are available, too.)

**This particular album is 12×12  square with 60 pages (30 spreads) and a brown leather cover.**

The Importance of Choosing the Right Photographer

Brides have SO many choices to make when planning their weddings that the whole planning process can become overwhelming… (What venue, which caterer, how many guests, what kinds of flowers…?) Photography is important to some brides, and to others it falls by the wayside.  Chances are most couples have never had the need to hire a professional photographer before now, and have no idea what to look for.

The importance of photography at your wedding should not be disregarded.  Long after the  gorgeous cake is eaten, the beautiful flowers wilt, the music stops, and you return from your amazing honeymoon the only tangible evidence of your special day will be your photographs.  Without photographs you have to rely solely on your memories, and those just can’t easily be passed down through the generations of your new family.

You may ask yourself, “Why do I need to hire a professional when I have friends or family that can take candids of the day?”

Well, you have spent so much time, effort, and money into making sure that your wedding day is perfect, and all of those details deserved to be captured in a beautiful way.  Do you want to compromise on capturing your memories of this once in a lifetime event by taking the chance of not hiring a professional?

Ok, so now that you hopefully realize just how important good photography is to your wedding, how do you choose the right wedding photographer for you?

Start the search right away.
Wedding photographers can book up very fast and as much as a year in advance, so booking your photographer should be one of the first things you do.

Find someone who has a style and quality that you love.
If you want light, airy photographs, don’t hire someone who only shows you edgy, dark images.  Also, if you want a traditional posed style of photography, then you probably won’t be happy with a photographer who shoots only in a photojournalistic, candid style.  That seems obvious, but sometimes brides will book a photographer in hopes that they will change their style just for them.  A photographers signature style is what they do best, and that is what you should hire them for.  If you hire them expecting a different look that what they present to you, then you will probably be disappointed.

Ask to see images or an album from a full wedding.
Anyone can get lucky with a great shot here or there, but it is important for a photographer to be consistent.  Of course, some photos may be more emotional or captivating than others, but all of the images should be exposed properly and of good quality.  The best way to know if they are consistent is to ask for an album with photos from a single wedding (not a compilation).

Do not shop by price.
Now, I understand that price IS important, and everyone has a budget and not everyone can afford the same things.  However, you should base your decision on style, personality, quality first… and then price.  If you shop solely on price, you might not like the quality of the service or product. So, make sure to do your research.

When you find that photographer whose work you like, meet with them.
Have a conversation and see if your personalities mesh well. Your photographer is the one wedding vendor that you are going to spend the MOST time with (before the wedding for engagement sessions and consultations, all day on your wedding day, and long after the wedding to finalize orders and album design). So, make sure that you actually like your photographer.  If you don’t really mesh well and have a connection with him/her, then you may be uncomfortable with the following you around on your wedding day, which can cause many natural moments to be missed.  If you can’t see yourself ever being friends and actually inviting this person to your wedding, then don’t hire them.  Move on to someone else.

Simply Amazing!!!

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Being a wedding photographer opens you up to meeting and learning about other wedding vendors in the area.  I have heard rave reviews and seen wedding cakes created by Dreamcakes Bakery in Homewood, Al, but never tasted their sweet confections myself.   They have daily cupcake selections (which are posted on their website), so I decided to head down to the bakery last Friday and pick up some goodies to bring home for me and my husband to enjoy.

I picked up the following cakes (descriptions taken from their website):

CHOCOLATE ASSASSIN :
Chocolate cake with a double whammy of chocolate buttercream inside and on top, sprinkled with white & milk chocolate curls.  This cupcake is danger!

MAPLE BACON:
Delicate butter cake with a maple cream frosting & topped with delicious bacon crumbles.  It’s a cupcake for breakfast!

CURIOUS GEORGE :
Moist banana cake with peanut butter frosting, topped with candy bananas.  Stop monkeying around & eat one!

Let me tell you…. They did not disappoint!  These tasty little cupcakes were not only beautiful, they were A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.  The creative combination of flavors was like a party in your mouth! My favorite was the Curious George, but the Maple Bacon came in a close second (which my husband agrees!)

So, if you are ever in the neighborhood… (Scratch that, you should just make a special trip over there), you need to pop in and try their yummy treats.  You can’t go wrong no matter what selection you make.

…and if you are a bride, you should seriously check them out for your wedding cake.  Not only will you have a tasty cake that your guests won’t be able to get enough of, but you will have a beautiful work of art to display at your reception as well!
